THE CRIME:

Pamela Ann Smart (née Wojas) is another woman who took a younger lover (in her case a 15-year-old schoolboy) who then killed his love rival. Born on 16 August 1967 in Coral Gables, Florida, blonde and beautiful Pamela married Gregg Smart (born 4 September 1965) on 7 May 1989 but less than a year later he was dead at the age of 24.

Smart persuaded her boyfriend Billy Flynn and his three friends to kill Gregg, claiming that he was an abusive husband. She had seduced the boy after meeting him at Project Self-Esteem at Winnacunnet High School in Hampton, New Hampshire.

At 8.30pm on 1 May 1990 Gregg was shot in the head at his home after his wife had deliberately left the cellar door open for his killers to get inside. While Pete Randall held a knife to his throat, Gregg pleaded for his life.

Flynn, after asking God to forgive him, shot him before the boys escaped in a car driven by Vance Lattime. Smart arrived home at 10.10pm in her 1987 silver Honda CRX and went inside to find her husband.

She ran to the nearby condominiums to seek help shouting, “My husband’s hurt! He’s on the floor. I don’t know what’s wrong with him!” The neighbours called the police who found the body. Smart was arrested at 1.05pm on 1 August 1990.

The arresting officer Detective Daniel Pelletier said, “I have some good news and I have some bad news. The good news is that we’ve solved the murder of your husband. The bad news is, you’re under arrest”.

WHERE:

4E Misty Morning Drive, Derry, New Hampshire, USA

WHEN:

8.30pm Tuesday 1 May 1990

THE AFTERMATH:

Smart was convicted on 22 March 1991 of being an accomplice to first degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder and witness tampering, largely on the testimony of Flynn and secretly taped conversations that contradicted her claims.

She was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Smart claimed, and still claims, that she had nothing to do with Gregg’s murder and that it was all Flynn’s idea because she wanted to end their affair.

“I have spent 10 years in prison for a crime I had no involvement in. I have been horribly punished for having an affair. The sentence I received is, in effect, a sentence of death.”

In October 1996 at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women in New York State, Smart was beaten up so badly by convicts Mona Graves and Ghania Miller that she suffered a fracture of her left eye socket and had to have a metal plate placed in the left side of her face.

She now has no feeling there. The attack didn’t stop her posing for raunchy pictures, which were published in the National Enquirer in 2003, an act that led to her being placed in solitary confinement. In an interview in 2000 she said, “I am very different from the media’s portrayal of me. I am not a cold, uncaring individual.”

Flynn was sentenced to 28 years in prison for second-degree murder. He is incarcerated at the Maine State Prison in Warren and was turned down for parole on 12 February 2008. He has married while in prison.

YOU SHOULD KNOW:

Pamela Smart told her husband’s killers to put her shih-tsu dog Halen in the basement, so it would not be traumatized and ordered them to use a gun, because a knife was too messy and might stain her white leather sofa.
