“The Lust Killer”
Jerome Henry “Jerry” Brudos was born at Webster, South Dakota, on 31 January 1939, the youngest of four sons. His mother, who didn’t want a baby boy, dressed him as a girl and constantly belittled him. From the age of five, he had a women’s shoe fetish. He would become sexually aroused by women in high heels and was arrested when he was 17 after forcing a woman, at knifepoint, to take her clothes off while he took pictures. He was sentenced to nine months in a mental hospital. On his release, he joined the army in March 1959 but received a medical discharge on 15 October 1959.
He kept his oddness confined at home where he insisted his wife walk around naked except for a pair of high heels while he took pictures. He also wore her underwear. On 26 January 1968, 19-year-old Linda Slawson was selling encyclopedias in Portland, Oregon when she knocked on Brudos’s door. He killed her and then cut off her left foot, which he kept in the freezer and took out to model the shoes he collected.
He dumped her corpse in a nearby river. On 26 November 1968 he strangled Jan Whitney, 23, and then had sex with her corpse before cutting off her right breast and making a mould of it. He threw her corpse into the same river as Linda Slawson’s body. On 27 March 1969 he killed 19-year-old Karen Sprinker in a Salem car park. On 21 April 1969 he attempted to kidnap Sharon Wood, 24, from a car park in Portland. She fought back and managed to escape. Two days later, Brudos claimed his last victim, 22-year-old Linda Salee. He kidnapped her from a supermarket by pretending to be a policeman.
Brudos was arrested on 25 May 1969 when he approached girls on the campus of Oregon State University.
