As she prepared for her wedding, she also prepared for him to rape her sister.
Karla Leanne Homolka was born in Port Credit, Ontario, Canada on 4 May 1970, the eldest of three girls. Blonde and beautiful, on 17 October 1987 she met Paul Bernardo, a handsome, sophisticated professional accountant with money. Within an hour of meeting, they were having sex.
In 1989 Homolka was sacked from her job as a veterinary assistant for stealing drugs. On Christmas Eve that year Bernardo proposed in what Homolka said was “the most romantic moment of my life”. She vowed to do anything to keep him happy. One problem arose: when they met Homolka was not a virgin, which upset Bernardo. He persuaded Homolka that it was his right, therefore, to take the virginity of her little sister, Tammy, 15, and that he should be videoed in the act.
In July 1990 Bernardo took Tammy for a drink and later told Homolka that they “got drunk and began making out.” Homolka knew that her fiancée was chronically unfaithful and was, in fact, the Scarborough Rapist who had attacked 12 young women since 4 May 1987.
Still she loved him and as she prepared her wedding, she also prepared for him to rape her sister. Two days before Christmas 1990 Homolka and Bernardo spiked Tammy’s cocktail with sleeping tablets and then Homolka pressed a Halothane-soaked rag against her sister’s nose and mouth. They took Tammy to the basement and filmed themselves raping her. While unconscious, Tammy began being sick. A few hours later she was pronounced dead at St Catharine’s General Hospital. The cause of death was choking on her vomit while drunk.
The couple moved into a house at 57 Bayview, Port Dalhousie where Karla searched for a replacement for Tammy — and found one: a girl who looked like Tammy. On Friday 7 June 1991 they drugged the unwary teenager and raped her, taking her virginity, before Bernardo sodomized her. The next morning she had no recollection of what had happened. Eight days later, Bernardo met Leslie Mahaffy, abducted her and took her back to the house where they repeatedly raped her for 24 hours before killing her. Meanwhile, the teenager they had drugged and raped returned regularly to the Bernardo home where she gave oral sex to Bernardo.
She thought that she was still a virgin so refused to consent to full intercourse. On 30 November 1991 Terri Anderson, a pretty and vivacious 14-year-old, disappeared. On 16 April 1992 they kidnapped Kristen French from St Catharine’s Church car park. They spent three days torturing the girl and captured it all on video. A fortnight after she was kidnapped, Kristen’s naked body was found in a ditch.

On 27 December 1992 Bernardo beat up his wife with a torch. On 5 January 1993 she filed charges against him and he was arrested. The police found a mountain of evidence at the couple’s home. On 14 May 1993 Homolka accepted a 12 year sentence plea bargain to testify against her husband.
Legal arguments meant that Bernardo’s trial did not begin until May 1995. Bernardo claimed that while he raped and tortured Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French, it was Homolka who actually killed them. In 2004 the Toronto Sun reported that Homolka had had sex in prison with “a male inmate she now wants to marry”. It also said that she was having a lesbian affair with inmate Lynda Verronneau who later wrote a book about Homolka. On 1 September 1995, Bernardo was convicted on all the charges against him regarding the kidnappings, rapes and murders of Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French. He was sentenced to life in prison.

The six videotapes depicting the torture and rape of Bernardo and HomoIke’s victims were destroyed. Homolka was released from Ste-Anne des-Plaines Prison on 4 July 2005. An attempt to change her name to Emily Chiara Tremblay was refused in the summer of 2006. In February 2007 she gave birth to a son and later that year left Canada for the Antilles in the West Indies where she now lives.
